After a winter break in Arizona “shooting guns of course” February bought along some hardy customers who were not going to let a bit of weather stop them having some fun! The LRGC annual annual awards dinner was a big hit and was well attended by the “Usual Suspects” over one hundred and twenty people in total. We all enjoyed sumptuous fare especially the Barron of Beef. Many trophies were presented to well deserving recipients [too many to mention] and Langley Gun Club proudly represents Canada in both the Olympics and at National level in pistol. It would be great to see the same level of representation in shotgun.
ClayShootingTrainer also donated several door prizes including a 1hr private lesson.

42nd annual 2 day collectors show and sale!
Clayshootingtrainer.com has been kept busy this fall with several large group bookings. The largest being, ThyssenKrupp Canada Ltd, who turned out with 36 of its staff for their first ever team building event.
We witnessed some impressive shooting by many first time shots along with some quite unorthodox shooting styles. I think one will always be known as the “Giovanni Stance” a style that many tried to impersonate due to Giovanni’s high hit rate. Needless to say,
Giovanni collected first prize for the highest score on the day, His team won first place for the team event which comprised of a score combined from the shooting competition and a Quiz. We really enjoyed being host to the ThyssenKrupp team and are honoured that we were chosen for their first team building event.
Their President and CEO Joseph Kerr commented on their experience “Click To read”
In addition to many private lessons and group days, we have enjoyed hosting several Stag events. The most recent was held for Jesse Carlson who just married and is probably on his Honeymoon as we write. Jesse shot like a natural, despite being dressed in a frock on a fairly cold day!

Gavin and Veronica + Ducks Unlimited come out to shoot some clay’s
This weekend saw our Facebook competition winner Gavin come out to the range for some fun. Gavin had graciously given his prize to his lovely wife Veronica, but not before he had secured a booking for himself : -) It wasn’t long before clay’s were exploding in the sky, followed with broad smiles. Veronica soon got to grips with the semi-auto 20g and Gavin shot well with a selection of 12g shotguns. I have a feeling we may see this couple again!
Also at the range this weekend were Darren and Bob from Ducks Unlimited. Darren had purchased his shooting session whilst at a recent Ducks Unlimited fundraising dinner. Bob who is on the committee of the local branch of Ducks Unlimited decided to tag along and join in. Both Darren and Bob smashed some clay’s and after quite a few rounds arms started to ache a little. The Ducks Unlimited organisation is committed to conserving Canada’s wetland areas. The organisation is highly active in Habitat Retention programs and Wetland Restoration to name but a few things. The organisation is a truly worthwhile cause and If you would like to support them or just learn more about what they do, then pay them a visit and check out one of the local events near you. This is probably one of the most important and at the same time controversial subjects related to shotgun shooting!
Gun Fitting is all too often shrouded in mystery and sometimes made more complicated than necessary, however occasionally you come across a refreshingly clear and easy to understand article covering the topic. I recently came across such an article in the Feb issue of a newly released publication to hit the high street in B.C. …. “CALIBRE” The Canadian Firearm Magazine. I picked up my free copy of this issue whilst shopping in Wanstalls Gun shop in Maple Ridge. Within this well illustrated article they talk about choosing your first shotgun gun for clay shooting and the importance of Gun Fit. The article discusses the fundamental points of how a gun should fit.
As pointed out in this issue and other articles written on this subject a consistent gun mount is an essential part of the process, however the initial information needed when purchasing a shotgun can be kept relatively simple.
Proper Gun fitting is something that should not be undertaken alone but with the help of an experienced fellow shooter with the correct knowledge or better still, a skilled gun fitter. Sadly this advice is something that is all too often ignored and results in a somewhat less than perfect fit.
There are many sources of information on the topic, one of the most extensive versions that I have encountered is a book written by Michael Yardley called GUNFITTING The Quest For Perfection For Shotguns & Rifles; [expanded & Revised 2nd Edition available via Amazon @ $29.95 U.S.] Another great article about this topic relating to competition guns is that written by Derek Partridge http://www.bunkershooting.com/Customising1.html
There are many more options open to today’s shooter to obtain a well fitting gun. Unless you are one of the lucky few who can find a perfect fit off the shelf, the options available to the rest of us are a custom made stock [historically the most expensive option], a factory made gun with adjustable comb and butt plate as offered by Browning, Beretta and several other manufacturers. These options can also be fitted after market by a competent gun smith. Another option is to buy a fully adjustable / anatomical stock that will fit to the specific action that you own. Two examples of these are Precision Fit Sock by Apogee Ordinance http://www.precisionfitstocks.com/ and the other is the Ergosign EvoComp http://www.ergosign.com/ Anatomical stock distributed by Nill-Griffe as preferred by many of today’s Olympic shooters. Although there is always an option for every budget, the pursuit of excellence comes at a price, and some of these custom options can cost more than the average trap gun!
Adam W, steals the show!
On Saturday Morning an enthusiastic group of first time Clay Shooters gathered out at Langley Rod & Gun Club to try Trap shooting for the first time. We were blessed with a beautifully sunny day, and although there were a few first time nerves these quickly disappeared once we got going. Following a safety briefing each member of the group shot five targets to get comfortable, then following one or two gun changes we settled into some more focused training. Everyone shot really well, hoots and applause erupted with every broken Clay. 15 year old Adam W, the youngest member of our group took us all by surprise, as soon as he found his mark he was busting one clay after the other, quite a natural! When he made contact with the Flash Clay’s a large orange cloud burst into view, loudly applauded by the enthusiastic group. After about 200 targets there were smiles and high fives all round and I think we may be seeing this group again, as they seek to improve their new skills.
If you would like to come and try Clay Shooting for the first time , or just have some questions then drop us a note via the contact form and we will call you straight back.
This Show is the largest Used & New, gun show in the Vancouver lower mainland.
